PCOS Acne Explained: Why It Happens & How to Treat It Naturally! | Clear Skin Clinic, Pune
What PCOS Really Does to Your Body?
PCOS, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, doesn’t just affect your ovaries. It disrupts your entire hormonal system.
In a normal cycle, one follicle matures and releases an egg. That’s ovulation. But with PCOS, multiple follicles begin to grow, yet none ovulate. These immature follicles stay in the ovaries as small cysts, causing irregular periods and hormonal imbalance.
Because of this imbalance, LH (luteinizing hormone) becomes disproportionately high compared to FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone). High LH stimulates ovarian theca cells to produce excessive androgens, male hormones.
This rise in androgens is what triggers acne, facial hair, scalp hair fall, and weight gain in many women with PCOS.
How PCOS Triggers Acne?
Oil glands in our skin contain androgen receptors. When exposed to high androgen levels, these glands become overactive, leading to excess oil and recurring acne.
This is the underlying reason for stubborn breakouts in PCOS patients. It’s not just a skin issue; it starts deep within the hormonal axis.
How to Manage Hormonal Acne: Step by Step
Managing PCOS acne requires a dual approach: dermatological and gynecological. Let’s start with lifestyle changes, which play a major role.
Sleep:
Aim for 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep. Good sleep supports hormonal balance and regulates your body’s circadian rhythm. Poor sleep increases cortisol, which worsens oil production and acne.
Stress:
High stress disturbs hormone levels. Practices like yoga, meditation, or even hobbies can help release endorphins and serotonin; your natural mood stabilizers. Managing stress improves both your skin and your hormones.
Exercise:
Daily activity reduces insulin resistance and balances hormones. Even a 30-minute brisk walk can improve PCOS symptoms and reduce acne flare-ups.
Diet:
Avoid high glycemic foods like milk, sugary items, and refined carbs. These spike insulin and androgen levels, worsening PCOS and acne.
Skin Care Basics for Hormonal Acne
Stick to a gentle cleanser; avoid scrubs that irritate sensitive, acne-prone skin.
Use a non-comedogenic moisturizer to maintain barrier health. And never skip sunscreen, even if you’re indoors.
