Charles Hard Townes, a professor at Columbia University, had an idea: what if molecules could amplify radiation themselves?

💡 In 1951, while sitting on a park bench in Washington, he realized that stimulated emission could create a pure, coherent microwave signal.

By 1953, together with Herbert Zeiger and James Gordon, he built the first maser — Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.
It used ammonia molecules to generate a steady, ultra-stable microwave beam.

In 1964, Townes received the Nobel Prize in Physics.
