Oh, Scotland! What an adventure! I was left in awe! From exploring the iconic Edinburgh Castle to strolling the medieval streets of the Old Town, this journey truly captured the essence of Scotland's rich heritage and natural charm. My travels took me to picturesque villages, tranquil lochs, and the cozy, welcoming atmosphere of traditional Scottish pubs. I visited Edinburgh Castle (though it was closed due to inclement weather, I explored the castle grounds, snapped photos, and chatted with the guards about its history), the Palace of Holyroodhouse, The Real Mary King's Close, Old Town, the Royal Mile, and Dunfermline Abbey—the burial site of Robert the Bruce. One highlight was a day spent exploring the ancient ruins of Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots. I learned that, 39 years earlier, the palace had been gifted to Margaret Tudor, sister of King Henry VIII, by her then-husband, King James IV of Scotland. The palace served as home to many Scottish monarchs before and after Queen Mary. To my surprise, I also discovered that Margaret Tudor had African women in her service, likely as slaves, which added another layer of complexity to the history. It was freezing cold and rainy during my visit, and one of the palace guards suggested The Four Marys Pub as a place to warm up. Chile, he ain’t never lied!!! At the pub, I met a friendly bartender who treated encouraged me to get the hot vegetable soup, some bread called baps, and she kept the hot toddies on repeat. We spent hours chatting about Scotland, and I walked away with so much newfound knowledge. By the time I left, I was definitely leaning, but my head was clear! I hopped on the train back to Edinburgh, headed to my hotel, and was out for the night. Though I didn’t get to visit Rosslyn Chapel this time, it’s at the top of my list for next time. Before leaving Scotland, I also treated myself to an official Scottish kilt, a sporran, and long wool hoses. Scotland was an unforgettable experience, and I can’t wait to return! So whether you're drawn to the mystique of ancient castles, the allure of Scotland's dramatic landscapes, or the warmth and hospitality of its people, this journey through Scotland promises to captivate your heart and leave you enchanted by every moment!
