Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd Server Overview | The R740xd is an enterprise 2U server packing a massive punch. In this video, we will review and outline the essential components of the PowerEdge R740xd as well as demonstrate how to properly install & configure your memory. To start with, the PowerEdge R740xd is the premier 2U server from the impressive Dell 14th Generation family. The R740xd is the next generation to the very popular Dell PowerEdge R730xd server. One big improvement you will find is the processors. Dell EMC R740xd’s are driven by dual Intel Scalable processors including Silver 4100 series, Gold 5100 & 6100 series and Platinum 8100 series. This is an LGA3647 socket. There are 24 DIMM slots running on DDR4 memory. This is the second generation of DDR4 based servers from Dell, which now boast faster speeds. The Dell R740xd has a couple different chassis styles including 12 Bay LFF and 24 Bay SFF.

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd supports three types of memory: ECC Registered (RDIMM), Load Reduced (LRDIMM) or Intel Optane Memory. RDIMMs and LRDIMMs are the more common options. Intel Optane Memory is a newer technology with some amazing advancements. ECC Registered will have size options of 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and up to 64GB. Unfortunately 128GB ECC Reg DIMMs will not work with the R740xd. Max configuration with ECC Reg is 1.54TB (24 x 64GB) DDR4 PC4 3200MHz Server Memory. However, with Load Reduced you can use 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and up to 128GB. The max configuration with LRDIMMs is 3TB (24 x 128GB) DDR4 PC4 3200MHz Server Memory. Your speed options are the same: 2133MHz, 2400MHz, 2666MHz, 2933MHz or 3200MHz.

Now let’s talk Intel Optane. The module sizes are enormous. 128GB, 256GB or 512GB. Extremely exciting. Speeds are a bit slower with choices of 2133MHz, 2400MHz and 2666MHz. With Intel Optane memory, the most you can load is 12 out of 24 DIMM slots with 512GB DIMMs. Unfortunately, you cannot load all 24 slots with Intel Optane RAM. Only 12 slots. Also, the proper way to install Intel Optane RAM is at the start of the memory channel. The good news is you can mix the Intel Optane Modules with load reduced modules. If you mix Optane and LRDIMMs, then the max would be 6.14TB (12 x 512GB) Intel Optane + 1.54TB (12 x 128GB) LRDIMM for a total max of 7.68TBs of memory! Yes memory! That sounds more like storage. Incredible performance.

There are two processors inside the Dell R740xd. Each CPU controls twelve memory slots, which means there are six memory channels per CPU. This equates to two DIMM slots per memory channel. To make it easier, Dell has labeled and color coded the DIMM slots, which makes it much simpler to properly install memory upgrades. Make sure to always install modules in the first slot of the channel, which is the white slot. Black is the 2nd slot. In our video, we will review the channels in greater depth and physically load the DIMMs.
