Toccata & fuga in D minor J.S. Bach on the Nyckelharpa

Was this masterpiece once written for violin? Was it not written by Bach? was it just an improvisation? Is it possible to reduce the arrangement from the grand-church-organ to four strings a keyboard and some sympathetic strings?
