Conversation with Dr Mbulaheni Thomas Mutengwe about Food Safety in Africa- special focus on South Africa. We talked about pesticide residue in fresh produce, world worst recorded listeriosis outbreak that occurred in SA and how to prevent such outbreak from happening in future. Dr Thomas also shared some life lessons. Dr Mutengwe works at the Directorate of Food Safety and Quality Assurance, Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, South Africa.

Dr Mbulaheni Thomas Mutengwe was born in a village called Miluwani in Venda (South Africa) on 21 February 1977. The love of being an agriculturist started at an early age whereby he was involved in doing gardening services after school. In 1995 he registered for B Agric degree at the University of Venda and completed the degree in 1997. He received two awards during the graduation ceremony in 1998 for his first degree: (1) Best Student in the School of Agriculture Science in 1997, and (2) Best Student in the Department of Plant Protection and Horticulture in 1997. In 1998, he registered at the University of Pretoria for BInsta Agrar (Hons): Plant Protection. The degree was awarded in 1999. He was first employed by the Perishable Product export control Board on 1 February 1999 until end of April 2007 as a Lead Assessor. He joined the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (Currently known as Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development) on 2 May 2007 as a Chief Food Safety and Quality Assurance Officer. Currently occupied a position of a Scientist Production Group B (to date). He completed his MInst Agrar: Crop Protection Degree on 2 September 2009 at the University of Pretoria. In 2012, he registered for PhD: Crop Protection degree at the University of Pretoria. In his thesis titled, Pesticide residue levels and estrogenic activity of fresh produce in South Africa. The PhD (Crop Protection) was awarded in the graduation ceremony held on 1t September 2016. Three peer reviewed international papers have already been published from this work. He has been involved in the South African Agricultural Industry for the past 22 years. Currently a registered student at the University of South Africa doing his 2nd year of LLB Degree.
