In this video we discuss how to Play The Real Book for intermediate piano players (level 2.) We use the Jazz Standard Song: Some Day My Prince Will Come.
The first thing that you should probably understand about the Real Book, is how important it is to NOT take it so literally. The fact that lead sheets aren’t even dedicated to a specific instrument speaks to how much context is missing and how important it is for the player to provide this context.
At an intermediate level we start defining the grid with much more precision (at the quarter-note level.) Harmonize the melody, and introduce a bass layer in moderation.
