Who Is Krishna | Celebrating Krishna's Birthday ~ Janmashtami

When we speak of Krishna, we are not speaking of a foreign person. We’re not speaking about somebody with whom we don’t already have a relationship. We’re not speaking of a Hindu god or a Christian god, a Buddhist god or a Moslem god.

When we speak of Krishna, we are speaking of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Cause of All Causes, the Original Person.

Krishna appeared in this world five thousand years ago, in His original transcendental form.

In the Bhagavad-gita Krishna states;
Although I am unborn and My transcendental body never deteriorates, and although I am the Lord of all sentient beings, I still appear in every millennium in My original transcendental form.

The original Cause of all Causes appears in this material dimension in His transcendental form, making it possible for us to meditate upon Him and hear His transcendental instructions on how we can come back to Him.

The sacred Vedas give a description of Krishna’s eternal, transcendental beauty.

“I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, Who is adept in playing on His flute, with blooming eyes like lotus petals, with head bedecked with peacock’s feather, with the figure of beauty tinged with the hue of blue clouds, and His unique loveliness charming millions of Cupids.”

“I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, round Whose neck is swinging a garland of flowers beautified with the moon-locket, Whose two hands are adorned with the flute and jeweled ornaments, Who always revels in pastimes of love, Whose graceful threefold bending form of Shyamasundar is eternally manifest.”

“I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, Who is Shyamasundar, Krishna Himself, with inconceivable innumerable attributes, Whom the pure devotees see in their heart of hearts with the eye of devotion tinged with the salve of love.”

In the Bhagavad-gita Krishna enlightens us as to the purpose of His appearance in this world;

“In order to deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to re-establish the principles of religion, I advent Myself millennium after millennium”

What is Krishna’s relationship with us?
Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita, “I am the goal, I am the sustainer, the master, the witness, the abode, the refuge and the most dear friend. I am the creation and the annihilation. I am the basis of everything, the resting place and the eternal seed. I am the seed giving father of all living beings.”

Krishna is the Original Father of ourselves and everything else. He is the origin of each and every one of us. He is our Father, our Mother, our Refuge, our Support, our Most Dear Friend.
Krishna is the perfect friend. Krishna’s love is so complete, so unconditional, that He loves us even though we have no love for Him. This is real love.

Because each of us is an eternal part and parcel of Krishna, our natural function is to engage in His loving service.

In the Bhagavad-gita Krishna gives us His transcendental instructions on how we can do so;
"I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me. The wise who know this perfectly engage in My devotional service and worship Me with all their hearts."

"The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are surrendered to Me, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss enlightening one another and conversing about Me."

"To those who are constantly devoted and worship Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me."

"Out of compassion for them, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance."

“If one offers Me, with love and devotion, a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it.”

Krishna loves to be loved, He loves to hear us sing His names. It’s natural for Krishna to enjoy our singing because He is the Supreme Beloved, and it’s natural for us to enjoy singing His names.

On Krishna’s Appearance Day we thank Krishna for appearing in this world. We celebrate by mediating on His glories and pastimes, and singing His beautiful holy Names.
