The Grants want to put Ellen's moral character to the test, which leads to more problems. It appears that Lovat's assertion that Ellen is not a virgin is finally getting Isaac's attention. The scene transitions to Lovat expressing her unexpected pride in Brian. As it happens, Balloch has informed him of the altercation between Murtagh and Brian over Ellen. A startled Brian tries to tell a falsehood, but Lovat is just happy that his son has damaged Ellen's reputation and doesn't care about the truth.
Balloch kills the Reverend to ensure that Simon's legitimacy is unquestioned, but he's far from done.
Porter taints Lovat's food that night, preventing him from having sex with Julia. He nods off, and Julia begins to clean the table. She notices the letters from the Grants that are signed by Henry Grant. When she recognizes Henry's handwriting, she is thrilled. As the episode draws to a close, it appears to be presenting new tensions that may be further explored in Season 2. Dougal and Murtagh's involvement, which is consistent with their familiarity with the original program, introduces the civil upheaval.
