How to Fix Install Failed Error on When Sideloading an APK File Xiaomi MIUI

I was recently trying to figure out a way to install the Google Play Store and all of its dependencies on the Redmi Note 12 that I imported from China. After having difficulty downloading an APK file directly onto the device via the built-in web browser, I decided to download it from my desktop PC and then transfer it over via USB.

However, I ran into an issue where I could not install the APK file. I just kept getting an "installation failed" error each time and I wasn't sure what was going on.

After doing some digging, I discovered that this was because of a hidden MIUI Optimization toggle that Xiaomi tucked away in the Developer Options area.

So in today's video, I want to show you how to fix this installation failed error when trying to install apps or games that were transferred over USB.

To begin, we first need to enable the hidden Developer Options menu. This is also known as enabling Developer Mode, and it's something that I've already showed you how to do on MIUI in the past. So instead of making this video longer than it needs to be, I'll include a link to that in the video description below for anyone who needs a step by step guide on that entire process.

Once Developer Mode has been enabled, we can find the Developer Options menu by opening up the Settings application and then scrolling down until you see the "Additional Settings" menu.

Tap this, and if you did everything correctly, then you should see a new option down here at the bottom labeled "Developer Options."

There are a ton of useful tweaks and options that you can experiment with from here, but let's focus on finding this MIUI Optimization toggle.

From here, we just need to scroll through this massive list until we get to the bottom. Once there, we should see the "Turn On MIUI Optimization" feature is toggled on. This is enabled by default and we can turn it off by tapping the toggle.

We're forced to wait at this screen for 5 seconds so we have time to read the warning. But we can complete this task and disable MIUI Optimization by tapping the Accept button down here at the bottom.

Now, Xiaomi has packed a ton of things within this MIUI Optimization toggle. If you disable this, you may no longer receive OTA update notifications. You should still be able to install these OTA updates, you'll just need to find the section in the Settings area to trigger them manually.

Disabling this feature is also said to change the Data Usage graph to what we're used to seeing on AOSP. Instead of the MIUI designed graph that Xiaomi has created. The same will likely happen with the Battery Usage graph too. It will look more like what you're using to seeing on AOSP rather than MIUI.

It's also been known to prevent users from changing to a 3rd-party launcher, preventing background apps from syncing data, and causing music players to be forced closed unexpectedly.

That's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the changes that this MIUI Optimization toggle makes to Android. So be aware that MIUI may function differently when this toggle has been disabled. But know that you can always come back to this same spot within the Developer Options menu to enable it again if you don't like the changes that it has made.
