Katherine Ward (13 June 1895 – 4 August 1979), affectionately known as Camberley Kate, was a British animal lover and eccentric, renowned for her lifelong dedication to rescuing and caring for stray and abandoned dogs. Over the course of her life, she is estimated to have saved more than 600 dogs, offering them love and shelter.

Her journey as a rescuer began in 1943 when she purchased a small terraced cottage in Yorktown, near Camberley, for £600. One of her first rescues was a greyhound that was about to be euthanized. Unable to let that happen, she saved him, and the two became inseparable. This marked the beginning of her mission. Soon, more dogs found their way into her care—some left tied to her front door, others abandoned in shopping bags on her doorstep, and many handed over by the local police. By 1975, Ward estimated that she had taken in her 500th dog.

Despite suffering multiple strokes and declining health, Ward continued her work until she could no longer manage. She later moved into Kingsclear residential home, ensuring that her beloved dogs would still be cared for by setting up a trust fund for them.

Camberley Kate passed away on 4 August 1979, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to saving animals in need.
