What do oil and porcelain art have in common? Artist Gunhild Vatn makes use of one to display the controversial nature of the other. Her art project Ocean Viking, is based on historical photographs of Norway’s first Oil platform, reflecting the story of a successful industrial adventure and the promise of prosperity and wealth in Norway. Hidden beneath this story of beauty and nostalgia also lies a dystopian vision, which questions the consequences of the oil aera. Vatn shares her personal experiences on how passion for nature and porcelain has made an impact on her art projects and how that stands in times when the world is aiming at moving away from fossil fuels. Gunhild Vatn is a ceramic artist and Associate Professor at the Institute of Art, Design and Drama at Oslo Metropolitan University. At TEDxOsloMet, Gunhild is speaking about her artwork with the Ocean Viking, Norway’s first oil platform, and how porcelain is a means for her to discover the underlying beauty.
Gunhild’s artwork often deals with social and political issues. She works with various materials and expressions, mainly in porcelain. Her can be seen in various exhibitions in Norwegian and in international museums and galleries.
