In this episode of the On the Ice series, I made an unexpected stop on Lake Erie after discovering the lake had completely frozen over — something that hasn’t happened like this in decades. Instead of heading straight to Chicago, I met up with local outfitters near Rattlesnake Island and rented one of their ice fishing shacks to try my luck at some legendary Lake Erie walleye fishing.

Day one of ice fishing on Lake Erie started slow, and after miles of driving across the frozen lake I managed to land just a single fish. But I wasn’t ready to give up yet.

On day two, I loaded up the SnowDog and chased the walleye across the ice for miles. After exploring farther west across the lake, about an hour from where I started the first day, I finally found the fish and got into some great Lake Erie walleye fishing action.

With an unusual warm spell pushing temperatures close to 60 degrees, I packed up, headed back to shore, and pulled everything out of the trailer in the parking lot for a Catch and Cook, cooking up fresh Lake Erie walleye in the sunshine after a great couple of days ice fishing Lake Erie.

After the adventure on the ice, it was time to pack up and continue the journey.
