Simpson Center sponsored project Imagining Trans Futures hosted a live panel in March 2022 featuring the first Black transgender woman elected to public office, Andrea Jenkins (Vice President of Minneapolis City Council) and ACLS Fellow Cassius Adair (Institute for Advanced Study, University of Minnesota). Jenkins and Adair discuss the role of public scholarship in trans studies and the humanities, including their collaboration on the Tretter Transgender Oral History Project. TTOHP documents the life stories and experiences of transgender and gender non-conforming people, with a focus on those often excluded from the historical record, including trans people of color and trans elders. The event has been recorded, edited, and made accessible on the Simpson Center YouTube channel. We welcome you to watch their discussion on public scholarship and community engagement and consider including it in your own courses on transgender studies, public scholarship, and community-engaged research.
