The September 11, 2001 attacks, commonly referred to as 9/11, were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks carried out by the extremist group al-Qaeda against the United States. On that morning, 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes. Two planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, causing both skyscrapers to collapse within hours. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was headed for a target in Washington, D.C., but crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers bravely fought the hijackers.

The attacks resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people, making it the deadliest terrorist incident in world history. The aftermath profoundly impacted global politics, leading to the U.S.-led War on Terror, the invasion of Afghanistan to dismantle al-Qaeda, and heightened security measures worldwide. 9/11 is remembered as a day of immense tragedy, heroism, and global solidarity.
