The waters of Indonesia teem with a huge variety of fish but the rapid degradation of coral reefs is threatening many species that are unique in the world. Illegal practices such as blast fishing and cyanide fishing are enormously destructive.

From Season 2 Episode 2 "Cyanide-laced Fish and Other Tasty Hazards": The demand for live capture of exotic fish is a real threat to the future of many species. Exported for aquariums and for human consumption, fish caught using cyanide represent more than 40% of Indonesia's exports. Fortunately, a few fishermen have adopted methods that respect the environment but they are in a very small minority.

The great adventure of the sailing ship Sedna IV continues. On the islands of Sumatra and Borneo, aggressive deforestation is ravaging the original tropical forest and forcing the last orangutangs from their homes. Gibbons also struggle to find refuge in a few, widely-scattered patches of forest, while the last of the severely threatened wild elephants cling desperately to life under attack from all sides.

In the Galapagos, warming waters are wrecking havoc on coral reefs. Ocean fishing using cyanide and explosives is an ongoing threat to the food security of many villages in Indonesia. From tracking the fearsome Komodo dragon to traditional whale hunting in small boats, an overview of the planet's biodiversity remains worrisome. But the inhabitants of the tiny island of Anuta, cut off from the modern world for generations, may well inspire new approaches for the future.
