You can automate serial numbers in Excel using a formula like =ROW()-ROW(A$1) which automatically adjusts when rows are added or removed. For a dynamic series that only appears when data is entered in an adjacent cell, use =IF(G5="", "", ROW()-ROW(G$4)) or the more modern =SEQUENCE(COUNTA(B:B)) function (in Excel 365 or 2021).
Method 1: Using ROW() for a simple, dynamic series
This method automatically generates a serial number whenever a new row has data entered into it.
In the first cell of your serial number column (e.g., B2), enter the formula =ROW()-ROW(B$1). You can also use =ROW()-1 if you always start in row 2.
Press Enter.
Click on the cell with the formula again, and drag the fill handle (the small square at the bottom-right corner) down to the last row of
your data.
To make it truly dynamic, you can use an IF statement to leave the cell blank if the corresponding row is empty. In cell B2, the formula would be =IF(A2="","",ROW()-ROW(A$1)).
