Umbilo Secondary School has been on cloud nine since the release of the matric results for the class of 2023, as they have proudly achieved an impressive pass rate of 85%.

With their results in mind, the talented KZN Philharmonic Orchestra chose the school to set the stage for a one-hour-long concert. 

The orchestra was met with enthusiasm and raucous applause after each set, playing songs and scores that were relatable to the audience, made up of grade 8’s for the concert’s first part, and grade 9’s for the second. 

Having been a part of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra for the past 40 years, and its lead conductor for ten of those, Lykele Temmingh, gave some background about their education development concerts. 

Deputy principal of the school, Mrs Azrene Ally, and Kavitha Pillai, the acting HOD for languages, and one of the event’s organisers, explained what the orchestra’s visit means to the school, and how it came about.
