India is a land of festivals. Every festival is celebrated with equal enthusiasm and fervor. Pongal, the harvest festival of Tamil Nadu, is one such festival. Why is the Pongal festival celebrated, how is it celebrated, what is its significance? Let us find out more in this episode of Culture ‘Shauk’ with Sunita Iyer.

The term 'Pongal' is derived from Tamil literature which means 'to boil'. It is an ancient festival of harvest celebrated in Tamil Nadu during the solar equinox after harvesting of crops like rice, sugarcane, turmeric, etc.

The history of the festival can be traced back to the Sangam Age i.e. 200 B.C. To 300 A.D. Although, Pongal originated as a Dravidian Harvest festival and has a mention in Sanskrit Puranas, historians identify the festival with the Thai Un and Thai Niradal which are believed to have been celebrated during the Sangam Age. According to the legends, during this festive season unmarried girls prayed for agricultural prosperity of the country and for this purpose, they observed penance during the Tamil month of Margazhi.
