In January 2017 I felt irreparably broken. I had survived a near death experience two months before after a vein was torn during a back operation which led me to bleed out internally for 4 days. After coming as close to death as one can go, I went onto develop a massive, painful blood clot extending from my abdomen to my left ankle. This severely my ability to walk and hampered my recovery even more.

On top of this, I was carrying the crippling weight of a relationship break up – a relationship I had given my all to. My ex-partner and I had both done our best to keep the relationship going but neither of us had the skills or the resources to make it through. My body was severely damaged and my fragile heart had shattered into a million, tender pieces.

Unexpectedly, I saw a post on Facebook from a fellow musician, Nicky Convine, saying that she had space for a musician to join her and a group of friends on Australia Day weekend. They were planning a getaway at a stunning holiday house on Mt Tamborine and I decided to put my hand up. I had only met Nicky once and most of the people going were new to me. What followed was a weekend of connection, endless music, some wild nights and much, much laughter.

On the Sunday morning of that weekend I went for a walk. It was early and there had been a wondrous, thick fog the night before. For the first time in a long, long time my heart felt full. I could see the beauty of the mountain around me and my steps were light for the first time since the operation. All of a sudden, I heard my inner voice tell me I had been lost. I experienced the new realisation that I couldn’t go back to how things had been before.

When I got back to the holiday house, I started playing my guitar and a song began to emerge. Nicky started singing ‘I was lost and I can’t go back’ and it became the main theme of the song. I’m always in wonder of the beauty of Nicky’s voice and the song evolved over the weekend to become much of what it is today.

‘I Was Lost’ holds such a special place in my heart. It reminds me of my suffering after a break up and the beginning of finding myself again. It reminds me that in every ‘setback’ there is a gift and also that there can be two sides suffering when a relationship finishes. It reminds me of the beautiful friendship Nicky and I have developed and the gift that she is in my life.

Every time I play the song with Nicky I feel a deep love for her and I’m flooded with joy hearing her divine spirit sing what was in my heart that weekend. I’ll be forever grateful for that weekend and the friends who helped relight the candle in my heart. I hope ‘I Was Lost’ helps ignite the candle in your heart too.
