The Japan railway system is world's most efficient, which was proved by hokkaido university researchers using a slime mold.

To represent tokyo and surrounding cities, they kept oat flakes (food) as dots, and put the slime mold in the center (tokyo) and let it grow. Initially, it grew in all directions, but slowly it formed a connected vein like structure to form shortest connections for all oat flakes.

This structure was very similar to the japan railway network around tokyo.
