For the first time in history, the Indian Army will showcase its Animal Contingent during the Republic Day Parade at Kartavya Path. This unique contingent highlights the crucial role animals play in military operations across some of India’s most challenging terrains.
The contingent will feature two Bactrian camels, four Zanskar mules, four birds of prey, ten Indian-breed dogs, and six traditional military dogs currently in service—often called the Army’s silent warriors. According to the Army, the unit represents a blend of tradition, innovation, and self-reliance within its operational framework.
Leading the march will be the Bactrian camels, recently inducted for missions in Ladakh’s cold deserts. Trained at the Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) Centre and College, Meerut, these animals support counter-terror operations, detection of explosives and landmines, security duties, disaster response, and search-and-rescue missions. The display offers a rare glimpse into the enduring partnership between soldiers and animals in India’s defence forces.
