New Jaguar ePace good all round compact premium SUV: Jaguar ePace Review & Road Test

Anyone looking for a compact family SUV that offers practicality and value for money should definitely be looking to add the Jaguar E-Pace to their test drive list. Affectionately known as The Cub, this sporty and stylish alternative is the smallest member of Jaguar’s ‘Pace’ range of SUVs, joining the larger F-Pace and I-Pace all electric models. As with other Jaguar products, the E-Pace makes use of lightweight aluminium in its build. Combine this with a range of new stronger mild hybrid engines and this smart family SUV could prove to be more appealing to those who aren’t looking for outright space and comfort. The E-Pace has been updated with the main focus on the interior. There’s a new climate control system and 11.4-inch touchscreen with Jaguar’s latest Pivi software. Both are slick, intuitive to use and bring the baby Jaguar in line with bigger and more expensive offerings from the company. The exterior was changed in this update as well, but the differences compared with older cars are hardly noticeable unless they’re parked right next to each other. The new E-Pace gets slightly different bumpers, a new grille, and slimmer headlights. When deciding which E-Pace to go for, you can either pick a regular E-Pace or a sportier looking E-Pace R-Dynamic. From here you then choose from trim levels S, SE and HSE. There is also an E-Pace 300 Sport, a standalone trim level which only comes with a 300hp petrol engine. The Jaguar E-Pace engine range consists of two diesels, three petrols and a petrol-powered plug-in hybrid. All, except the PHEV, are 2.0-litres in size. The entry-level diesel is the only one available with front-wheel drive and a manual gearbox, the rest come with all-wheel drive and an automatic. The plug-in hybrid is new for 2021 and combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, offering an electric only range of up to 34 miles. The plug-in is perfect around town and to this end the E-Pace could be a viable proposition, however, the effectiveness of rival cars on your shopping list, such as the Audi Q3, BMW X1 or the Mercedes-Benz GLA could prove more viable as they are better all rounders. Also, whilst the Range Rover Evoque is available with the same powertrains, for around the same money, some people might prefer an SUV with a Range Rover badge.
