This is a new and improved version of my old 'rock pile tutorial' where I use a new tool called MASH available in Maya 2016 Ext 2, to generate a convincing rock pile. This method can be used for a wide range of asset creation methods. It is a really simple approach to instancing and the best one I have found to date.
