A 73-year-old man accused of killing three people in Poplar appeared in court Wednesday, according to U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme.

Michael J. Ackerman, also known as Michael J. Littlebull, faces three counts of second-degree murder, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, a $250,000 fine, and five years of supervised release.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Timothy J. Cavan presided over the proceedings, during which Ackerman was detained pending further legal action.
