Is the automatic shifter in your Miata sloppy as you move it through the gears? Is there excessive play when it's in gear? Tighten it back up by replacing four little bushings for $30 to $40. In this video I go over the process in my NB Miata, but I'm guessing the process is very similar in the NA as well.

For my NB, the part numbers for the bushings are:
J001-46-684
H002-46-085
You will need two of each bushing for a total of four. Please verify these parts numbers are correct for your vehicle before purchasing!
