MADRID, December 3 (Primera Liga) - Real Madrid fought back from a goal down to record their ninth win of the season and ensure Jose Manuel 'Mane' Esnal's reign as Athletic Bilbao coach got off to a losing start.
Mane can take great heart from his side's showing though, with Athletic providing a tough test for the hosts in a feisty encounter.
The struggling Basque outfit even managed to take the lead through Luis Prieto's long-distance strike, but second-half goals from Brazilian duo Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos earned Real the victory.
Roberto Carlos' late winner, which was of a similar distance to Prieto's strike, came after Athletic had been reduced to 10 men, with Aritz Aduriz being handed a straight red card.
After a low-key opening 15 minutes, Real looked to have woken up as they had three efforts on goal in quick succession through Raul, Michel Salgado and Sergio Ramos, although the deadlock remained unbroken.
Athletic had to wait until the 22nd minute for their first serious attempt of the contest, but it so very nearly produced the game's opening goal.
Standing some 25 yards out, Fran Yeste curled a freekick towards the top corner of the net which, much to the relief of Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas who was rooted to his spot, flew just inches wide of the woodwork.
Real responded to that by creating their best chance of the first half in the 33rd minute, which Robinho spurned after being put clean through on the left by Ruud van Nistelrooy.
That miss proved costly as soon after Real were behind, albeit it in somewhat controversial circumstances.
A free-kick was tapped to the side for Prieto, who blasted in a diagonal shot from around 30 yards that flew through a crowd of players before beating the diving Casillas.
The Real players were furious the goal was allowed to stand, with the home team apparently feeling an offside Athletic had interfered with play.
Real coach Fabio Capello had also seen enough, and he replaced Emerson and Jose Antonio Reyes with fit-again duo David Beckham and Ronaldo at half-time.
And it was Beckham who helped create Real's first chance of the second half in the 55th minute, heading a pass through for former Manchester United team-mate Van Nistelrooy to latch onto. and the Dutchman then saw a goal struck off by an offside flag as Real upped the pressure.
Real's other substitute Ronaldo then stamped his mark on the game by slotting home the equaliser just after the hour.
Ramos lofted a pass over the Athletic defence and Ronaldo, after taking one touch to get the ball under control, then slotted past Lafuente.
Raul, Beckham and Ronaldo all tried their luck as Real searched for the winner.
But it was another of Real's Brazilian contingent who finally made the breakthrough eight minutes from time.
Picking up a pass from Salgado 30 yards from goal, Roberto Carlos took a touch before powering home left-footed shot that arrowed into the bottom corner of Lafuente's net.
That proved to be the winning goal, although Real needed a brilliant save from Casillas late on to deny Andoni Iraola.
