Retaining Rings (also known as snap rings) require specialized pliers to remove and reinstall. Thankfully, some reasonably priced tools are readily available. DirtFarmerJay compares two plier sets and provides links to purchase them.

Retaining rings, also known as snap rings, keep parts in place in various applications, including cars, trucks, agricultural equipment, trailers, and manufacturing equipment.
They are efficient, cost-effective, and don’t take up much space. They are used externally and internally, meaning that depending on where they are placed, the inside or outside edge of the ring is engaged in a groove and keeps a component in place.
A common use is holding a shaft in place or a tire hub onto an axle end. Internal rings need to be squeezed in to remove and replace them, and external rings need to be opened up wider to remove and replace them.
You probably won’t use retaining ring pliers often, but when you need one, having the tool on hand makes the job go smoothly and quickly. For the price, we think it’s worth having a set on hand.
Irwin/Vise Grip offers a moderately good quality and capacity tool. At the time of filming, the set was about $17. It is good for small to medium rings and has jaw sets that are easily changed out in a couple of sizes with straight or angled tips. Depending on how the jaw sets are affixed to the handle set, a squeeze of the handles makes the tips close in or open out.
These are smaller pliers at 6.5 inches and have a spring to have the handles self-open.
The jaw has to be removed and repositioned for each function. The inconvenience isn't a big deal for the price point and how often the tool is used. Here’s a source where you can get a set:

We’ve added another tool. We found the smaller set not robust enough to handle larger rings, and the tip diameter was too small to hold the rings tightly for extraction or replacement.
We found the Channellock® 8-inch #927 Retaining Ring Pliers at our local big-box home improvement store for about $38.
You can check them out here:

We like the 927 pliers from Channellock over the Irwin set for several reasons:
They are well made with a nice fit and finish
Every component is made in the U.S.A. and comes with a limited lifetime warranty. However, if the tool is misused or abused, they reserve the right not to warranty it.
The 8” pliers are comfortable in the hand and provide plenty of leverage. The spring between the handles self-opens the handles.
Converting from exterior to interior ring applications (and vice-versa) is a simple switch of the tab and a short squeeze of the handle
5 sets of interchangeable tips are supplied, 3 are straight, and 2 are 90 degrees. The tips are held in place in the thick plier jaws with a set screw and tightened/untightened with the supplied hex wrench. They are conveniently stored in the supplied pouch.
These pliers work on a variety of sizes - internal rings ⅜” to 2” (9.5 to 50.8 mm) and external rings ¼” to 2 “ (6.4 mm to 50.8 mm), with .039, .047, and .074 tip sizes.
While there are other products on the market, these two are readily accessible. Based on the types of equipment you are working on, and how frequently you use the tool, you can make an informed decision about which one to add to your toolbox.
