1. Hamburgers come from Hamburg. The common belief is that the American hamburger borrowed its name from a dish called "Hamburg Style Beef" or "Hamburg Steak" which arrived in the United States from the German city of Hamburg in the 19th century.
2. Hamburg city has the most bridges in the world. More than Venice, London and Amsterdam combined!
3. Hamburg was named with the Germanic elements ham ‘water meadow’ + burg ‘fortress’, ‘fortified town’.
4. The border between Germany and Denmark once ran across the borough of Altona.
5. Hamburg is protected by a patron goddess Hammonia who is the female personification of Hamburg and its Hanseatic values of freedom and harmony, peace and welfare, prosperity and trade.
6. Hamburg’s City Hall has more rooms than Buckingham Palace
7. Every day more than 50 ships are welcomed into Hamburg by playing the national anthem of the country where the ship is registered or bid farewell by hoisting the signal flag UW to wish departing ships bon voyage.
8. The Lake Alster swans have a father. The beautiful Lake Alster in the heart of Hamburg is known for its game of over 100 swans. These birds are looked after by the Schwanenvater – literally, “the swan father.”
