This week could not have made it more obvious: Republicans don’t want anyone to have ANYTHING.

It’s Jenny with Capitol Watch and I’m here to give you the rundown on what’s been happening at the Arizona Legislature.

This week at the capitol was basically bad bill-a-poolza with every type of horrible bill being heard.

First off, we have an update on the bill that would ban the banning of conversion therapy 

The bill was introduced again as a striker amendment 

Republican Senator Vince Leach from LD-11 introduced an extremely dangerous bill targeting the LGBTQ+ community

His proposed amendment would ban the banning of conversion therapy.

However, thanks to the community who fought this horrible bill it died a few weeks ago

and when it was introduced again this week as a striker, the entire bill got held. 

So it hasn’t been heard  which is a really good sign and shows that Republicans did not want their vote to be public in support of conversion therapy. 

The legislative session is by no means over so we should all stay diligent about the possibility of this or similar bills coming back. 

Now, what if I told you that 51% wasn’t enough to win an election?

That’s right, that’s the new attacks on voting that Republicans are trying to push through.

A new wave of attacks on ballot initiatives have begun to pick up at the Arizona Capitol.

Two of these prominent bills include HCR2016 introduced by Yuma Republican Tim Dunn and SCR1024 by Warren Peterson.

HCR2016 would require a 60% vote to pass a ballot initiative. 

That’s right, it would fail if it got 55%. 

So under this measure, neither Prop 208 the invest in education initiative or Prop 207 the initiative to legalize marijuana would have passed.

SCR1024 would require this only when it has to do with tax revenues, a clear response to prop 208.

Republicans are freaking out that Arizona voters are turning out and making their voices heard and choosing to fully fund public education.

So in response, Republicans are trying to make the process harder. 


There was also a bill that was a clear attack on public lands in Arizona
HB2702 was introduced by Rep. Mark Finchem who was at the D.C. January insurrection

This main point of this bill is to prevent the federal government from being able to purchase private land for the benefit of indigenous communities 

or for the establishment of public lands or any public land expansion

This bill is harmful and would also grant veto power to the state.

It is complete unconstitutional legislative overreach to target our environment.
