The high rates of treatment resistance, relapse, and adverse side effects in patients with schizophrenia suggest that a major treatment gap remains. For patients with serious mental illness, it is important to optimize adherence based on the reasons for non-adherence, allowing for better implementation and optimization of treatment and relapse prevention strategies.
