(10 Sep 2015) JONAS CUARON FOLLOWS FATHER'S FOOTSEPS WITH FILM 'DESIERTO' AT TORONTO FILM FESTIVAL
Director Jonas Cuaron is following in the footsteps of his famous father, with a new film "Desierto."
Cuaron is the son of Alfonso Cuaron, the Mexican director who made the Oscar-winning 2013 film "Gravity."
"Desierto" - or "Desert" - stars Gael Garcia Bernal and is set to open Sunday (13 Sept. 2015) at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Jonas worked with his father on the script for "Gravity" and this time he paired up with Gabriel Garcia Marquez's grandson, Mateo Garcia, to write the script for "Desierto".
Garcia Bernal plays the role of a migrant fleeing from a U.S. Vigilante.
"Since I've began writing the script, I was thinking of Gael (Garcia Bernal). This is the kind of story that all the drama lies in your star, and basically the story follows Gael throughout the entire movie, and it's important to have an actor that can transmit the drama to the audience. For me, he was important, and also because since I was doing background investigation, I've noticed that Gael had participated in many documentaries on the matter. I knew then that, before starting the movie, he had done all the research already for his role. That's why I've always considered Gael for the role, " Jonas Cuaron said in Mexicto City, Wednesday (9 Sept. 2015)
Production of "Desierto" is very much a family affair, with Jonas' father Alfonso and his uncle Carlos producers of the film.
"I felt attracted by Jonas' script, and as soon as I read it, I told him: 'It's awesome and I would like to help you'. And he answered me: 'I would like you to help me,' Carlos Cuaron recalled.
"Same happened with Alfonso. It was the chance to make a collaboration between the three of us, and of course it won't be the last."
The movie was filmed largely in the Baja California desert and depicts the journey of a group of migrants trying to cross the Mexico-US border when they are faced by a racist border patrol officer.
Cuaron said he is "excited" about coming to present his movie at Toronto.
"Toronto is a very important festival, and the simple fact of me being there makes me proud. And it's also a festival which helps launching and placing movies very well, and I feel close to "Desierto", and want to see what happens next".
"Desierto" will also screen at the London Film Festival.
