Today I want to start with an idea that sounds simple, but the more I think about it, the more uneasy it makes me. It’s the idea of free energy. The notion that somewhere in this universe, there could exist a machine that runs forever, producing energy without any fuel, without any cost. It seems very reasonable because we’re used to seeing motion everywhere: the Earth spins, planets move, wind blows, water flows, particles vibrate endlessly. Nature always seems “busy.” But then you start digging deeper.

You start asking: where does that motion come from? How is it sustained? And why, if energy seems to be everywhere, do we still have to pay an electric bill every month? This is where the rules begin to change. Physics doesn’t look at energy the way our intuition does. It doesn’t just ask how much energy there is, but how that energy is organized, whether it can do work, and what the price is. That’s why physicists have had to classify the dream of perpetual motion into very specific categories. There are machines claimed to create energy out of nothing.
