약 5,600만 년 전인
팔레오세 말부터 에오세 초까지,
20만 년이란 짧은 시간 동안
지구의 평균 기온이 5~8℃나 오르는
역사상 가장 짧으면서도 강력했던
지구온난화 시기가 있었죠.
이른바 “팔레오세-에오세 최대온난기”,
영어로는 이걸 줄여서,
“PETM”이라 불리는 이 시기는
현재 지구온난화와 비슷한 양상을 띠고 있어,
기후 변화를 연구하는
많은 과학자들의 주목을 받고 있죠.

도대체 먼 옛날, 이토록 급작스런 온난화는
왜 일어났던 걸까요?
그리고 당시 생태계엔 어떤 변화가 있었을까요?
또, 기온은 어떻게 다시 낮아지게 된 걸까요?
오늘은 수천만 년 전 있었던
