SOLVED: Florida Cold Case | Lily Johnson, 3 | Missing Girl Found Alive After 54 Years (1956–2010)

The lemonade glass in Helen Johnson's hand was still beaded with cold when Lily Johnson vanished at the Florida State Fair, in the heart of bustling Jacksonville, a city of more than 200,000 people. June 16, 1956, began with a brilliant blue sky and festival music echoing across the fairgrounds. At 11:23 a.m., Helen’s neighbor, Mrs. Mayfield, still saw her bending down to pay for drinks while Lily—three years old, blonde hair, wearing a green dress—stood beside her, clutching a horse-shaped balloon.

Just seconds later, when Helen straightened up, the child was gone from the crowd. A man in a Panama hat was seen carrying a little girl away from the play area toward the parking lot. The young mother ran after them through the blaring loudspeakers and chaotic crowd, but the green dress of Lily was the last flash of color she saw in the sea of people. What happened in the next fifteen minutes would haunt Florida for more than half a century.
