Описание к видео 50 Years of Touki Bouki: How a film that Flopped on Release Became a Cult Classic?

How familiar is African cinema to you?

Senegalese director 🇸🇳 Djibril Diop Mambety, is one of the African film pioneers who launched the golden age of Senegalese cinema in the 1970s together with Ousmane Sembène. In particular, [Touki Bouki], released in 1973, has become an iconic African cult classic and various media has paid homage to the film over the years. For example, Beyonce & Jay-Z's 2018 RUN TOUR promotion film and Little Simz's music video. It's incredible that the history and ‘Journey of the Hyena’ enters its 50th year with no signs of slowing down.

Recreating African oral traditions and mythological symbols into non-linear structures, [Touki bouki] gives the impression of dreaming. The director made sharp criticisms of the continent's political and social contradictions at that era but also tried to capture the cultural and ethnic values that the continent enriched.
