Anemia of Chronic Disease | Causes, Pathophysiology, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

Anemia of Chronic Disease is a hematological condition involving low levels of hemoglobin (red blood cells) due to chronic inflammation from a variety of chronic disease conditions. Due to elevated and chronic levels of inflammation, production of hepcidin in the liver is increased, leading to inhibition of iron absorption from the small intestine and inhibition of iron release from macrophages. Decreases in iron utilization lead to decreased hemoglobin production and subsequent anemia, which causes a variety of signs and symptoms. In this lesson, we discuss the signs and symptoms of anemia of chronic disease, along with how it is diagnosed and how it is treated.
