In 2020, the province of Southern Leyte and Oceana gathered a team of marine scientists to conduct a scientific expedition in Panaon Island. It was identified as part of the reefs in the world that are likely to withstand the adverse impacts of climate change.

Over the course of 21 days, the team discovered corals in good to excellent conditions and coral cover of as much as 70%. However, they were also able to document the threats to Panaon Island’s marine resources.

Filipinos depend on our marine resources for food, livelihood and protection. We must protect our coral reefs, starting with the reefs of Panaon island. Its excellent coral cover deserves national protection under the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System or the ENIPAS Act of 2018.
