Kastaniani Of Pogoni – Ioannina | Greece [4K]

Kastaniani (or Kastani) is a mountainous village of the Regional Unit of Ioannina at an altitude of 640 meters. Kastaniani is located next to the border of Greece with Albania and is historically included in the villages of Pogoni and in fact belongs to the villages of Lakka Pogoni. It is 66 km. NW. from Ioannina and 31 km. from Kalpaki. The village is built on a hill overlooking southern Albania and the Dropoli plain, in an area with running water, overgrown with horse chestnuts and plane trees.
It is one of the oldest settlements of Pogoni as mentioned by Nicolas Hammond. It had experienced great prosperity before the conquest of Epirus by the Turks (1430), when 1.200 families lived there, according to Ioannis Lambridis in “Pogoniaka”. Many consider the residents of Kastaniani to be the first settlers of Kozani, around 1490. Kastaniani was definitively incorporated into the Greek state in 1913 with the Protocol of Florence. Fierce battles took place in the village and the surrounding hills during the Greco-Italian War and the Civil War. A current attraction in the center of the village is the Natural History Museum.
