A pro-Ukraine group of Russian partisans said in a Telegram post on Monday (June 5) it controlled the Russian border town of Novaya Tavolzhanka and published footage of armed men in camouflage gear walking through the town.

The statement came after Russia's Defence Ministry said it had repelled a Ukrainian attempt to cross into the Belgorod region in southern Russia on Sunday (June 4) and killed "more than 10" fighters, Russian news agencies reported.

The governor of Belgorod, Vyacheslav Gladkov, on Sunday also reported fighting in the town of Novaya Tavolzhanka with what he called "Ukrainian saboteurs.

Reuters was able to confirm the location of footage from the Russian Volunteer Corps as Novaya Tavolzhanka, Belogorod region from the position of buildings, road and roof design seen in the video which matched satellite imagery of the area. Another pro-Kyiv Russian militia published drone footage on Monday showing a military vehicle on fire in Novaya Tavolzhanka.
