A high-powered committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be meeting on May 24 to select the next Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief, sources said. Along with PM Modi, Chief Justice of India Justice NV Ramana and Leader of Opposition Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary will also take part in the meeting.Before the Lokpal Act was legislated, the CBI director was appointed by the 1946-DSPE Act. Now, the Lokpal Act governs the appointment of the CBI director but the functioning of the agency is still government by the pre-Independence Act. The MHA list goes to the Department of Personnel, which prepares the final list on the basis of "seniority, integrity and experience in the investigation of ant-corruption cases".
