In this video we will compare the difference between an impulse file loaded by the default IR loader in Waves PRS SuperModels which trims and fades impulses longer than 50 milliseconds and the same file loaded in its entirety by Voxengo Boogex.

By trimming an impulse file around 50ms, the ambient sound that may have been captured by the microphone when the impulse was created is eliminated (for example, the pure reverb impulses tend to be contained in longer files). In the case of PRS supermodels this does not have major consequences since the plugin offers its own simulator of ambient sounds and the duplication of the room could be conflicting with different room sizes recreated by the AIR button. But the reality is that the main reason why guitarists use impulses is because we want to capture the maximum level of realism, including the sound of the room where the impulse was recorded.

In our comparison the difference is minimal because the sound is mostly clean but still you can hear how the track where the impulse is fully charged has more body and sounds more natural. On tracks with a high level of distortion, this difference can be much more audible and decisive.

The solution for this is of course to use the AIR knob to recreate the part suppressed by the trimming: minimum levels create low-level early reflections (precisely what we lost with the trimming in this example) while higher values ​​resemble the typical reverberation of a room with microphones dedicated to the capture of the ambient. This option offers more versatility as opposed to having to select different impulses recorded at different distances; the other option is simply BYPASS the IR loader of Supermodels and use Voxengo Boogex which is free!
