Liberia Mines Again - From Dream to Reality

ArcelorMittal has helped Liberia to jumpstart its economy after being devastated by 14 years of civil conflict. Our Liberian iron ore mining project represents an important part of our business strategy. It is an opportunity to show how responsible and transparent business practices can benefit both the company and the host country, bringing about mutual understanding and trust, which in turn can further help to improve stability.

Following a review of the Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) with the new Government of Liberia that was concluded on December 28, 2006, which called for an investment that would exceed US$ 1.0 billion, we set out on the task of rebuilding the country's mining infrastructure.

Since the start of construction operations in 2006, ArcelorMittal Liberia has created much needed employment both directly and through contractors. Significant progress has already been made in rebuilding road, rail and township infrastructure. Currently work continues in developing plans to start mining operations in 2011.
