December 6th is a date of massive explosions and historic freedom! In 1917, the Halifax Explosion leveled a city, the largest man-made blast before the atomic bomb. Decades earlier, the 13th Amendment (1865) abolished slavery in the U.S. The ancient world came alive in 1912 with the discovery of the Nefertiti Bust. Tragedy struck underground in 1907 with the Monongah Mine Disaster. The 1960s ended violently at the Altamont Free Concert in 1969. Politically, Finland declared independence (1917), and Hugo Chávez was elected in Venezuela (1998)!
