The Kuiper belt is a set of icy objects beyond the orbit of neptune. All objects in the Kuiper belt were affected by the gravity of Neptune but in 2003 the Sedna was discovered its orbit is so elongated and is not affected by Neptune's gravity it surprised astronomers including Mike Brown who discovered Sedna.

After that discovery in the search for other objects like Sedna scott sheppard discovered some objects in 2014. Then Mike Brown and his colleague Konstantin Batygin research the reason for that object's weird orbit. In the research, they find 5 to 10 earth-mass planets alternating this object's orbit. Then they released the research paper in the name of “Evidence for a distant giant planet in the solar system” in 2016. After releasing the paper this planet9 became a hot topic.

The reason they couldn’t find it until now is that it's 560au away from the sun and the result of that distance is very faint so it's hard to detect. In finding exoplanets Most exoplanets are found through indirect methods measuring the dimming of a star that happens to have a planet pass in front of it, called the transit method, or monitoring the spectrum of a star for the tell-tale signs of a planet pulling on its star and causing its light to subtly Doppler shift.
We can’t use any one of these techniques to find planet9 which makes it more hard.

Some astronomers say this object's orbit may be random, when we didn't find many objects in our outer solar system we can’t say the planet9 is the reason for this object's weird orbit.
In the 2017 research paper written by Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown they said the possibility of planet 9 could be real is 99.975% and then after some research they said in the 2021 research paper the possibility of planet 9 could be real is 99.6%.

So, until they find this planet this is nothing but a hypothesis.
