Bach’s “Musette” in D Major (BWV Anh. 126) is a lively and engaging piece from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. Although long attributed to J.S. Bach, it is now believed to have been composed by one of his sons or a student. The musette was originally a French dance that imitates the sound of a small bagpipe, reflected in the piece’s rustic, bouncing left-hand octaves and energetic character. The piece features clear phrasing, hand shifts, and contrasting articulations, making it an excellent choice for developing technique and musicality in early intermediate students.

In this video, I’m working on “Musette” with a new transfer student who has very stiff wrists and hands. Our focus is on cultivating relaxation after tension, especially when playing staccato notes. We’re also working on phrasing, practicing hands separately and together, and breaking the piece into short, manageable chunks. These strategies help the student develop flexibility, clarity, and expressive playing-essential skills for mastering both this Baroque gem and future repertoire.
