Описание к видео 33 years after the Earth Summit in Rio, Brazil | Carbon Politics E04

Carbon Politics is a monthly video podcast series by CSE that focuses on the political and economic trends characterising climate policy discourse, with a special focus on the challenges and opportunities faced by developing countries.

In 1992, Rio de Janeiro hosted the landmark Earth Summit, where the first global climate deal was agreed upon by the world. The UNFCCC was born, forged in a unique moment of recognition accorded to new climate science, aligning geopolitics and civil society pressure.

Three decades since, the Convention endures, despite turbulent political cycles, dilution due to pressure from industry, and changing nature of Global South economies. But the climate regime in now fraying. We need fresh ideas – as also learnings from the past.

In this episode of Carbon Politics, we go back to where it all began, and invite two attendees of the 1992 Summit — Sunita Narain and Anumita Roychowdhury of CSE — to share what they observed back then, and where they see the world heading.
