Tesla's batteries come from Chinese coastal city; Ningde thrives on lithium-based energy industry

This factory is one of the major bases for the production of lithium batteries in China. You might find it nothing special, but the batteries produced by this company are key components to new energy vehicles. And they are set to be sold to some of the world’s leading automakers, such as Tesla, BMW and Volkswagen.

CATL, or Contemporary Amperex Technology, has become a big name in the new energy vehicle industry in recent years, as it dominates the global production of electric car batteries.

To both industry outsiders and insiders, the battery giant is a mystery… as few people are allowed to get a close look at its production lines.

According to one staff member, in the lighthouse factory in its Ningde headquarters, a cell can be manufactured in just one second. And the defect rate is only one in a billion due to the support of cutting-edge technology, from AI to cloud computing.

Latest data shows the value of the company’s industrial output from January to May this year surpassed 12-billion US dollars, accounting for over 30-percent of Ningde’s total.

This success influenced China’s largest car maker, SAIC Motor, to set up one of its manufacturing bases in the city.

The factory here can now manufacture 63 finished cars per hour, and it’s become the largest export base of finished new energy vehicles in China, selling electric cars to more than 20 countries and regions around the world.

Back in 2007, before these enterprises were established, Ningde’s GDP was only about 7-billion US dollars, ranking last in Fujian Province.

But driven by new energy industries, Ningde became the only city in the province to achieve double-digit GDP growth last year, totaling 10-point-7-percent.

According to the city’s five-year plan for the high-quality development of its manufacturing industries, by 2025 Ningde's lithium-based new energy output is expected to reach 55-billion US dollars.
