ICD: Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator

Описание к видео ICD: Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator

In this video, we will talk about implantable cardioverter defibrillator or ICD in detail. In an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), a battery powered device is attached to the heart. In addition to tracking your heartbeat continuously, it treats life-threatening heart rhythms that occur very quickly. Normally, your heart pumps blood in a certain rhythm based on electrical signals. A disruption in those electrical signals can cause a change in rhythm. If this occurs, your heart may not beat well enough to pump blood throughout your body. Sudden cardiac arrest can result from some life-threatening rhythms, such as ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. By giving the heart an electrical shock, the ICD prevents this from happening. The device is placed under the skin of your chest, belly, or underarm to restore a normal heart rhythm. The ICD is connected to your heart by flexible wires called leads. If necessary, the ICD can also function like a pacemaker.
