Step 6 of service manual is check Air/mix door. Also known as "blend door". When the actuators fail they will make clicking noises for a while. Then they go quiet. What happens is the gears strip or break. Every OEM uses these instead of cables in 2000+ newer vehicles. They are inexpensive and easy to replace. This blend door actuator is the most labor intensive to replace.
